How Trees Can Impact Your Roof

Trees do more than beautify your yard and bear fruit; they also protect your roof. The greatest form of protection comes from the shade provided by tree foliage. Shade is a big plus. Many an Orange County roofing company must repair damage caused by excessive sunlight. Over time, solar illumination deteriorates shingles and leaves them vulnerable to leaking. It also leaves your wallet vulnerable to hefty roof repair bills. Shade provided by tree limbs restricts the passage of sunlight, thereby minimizing solar wear and tear.

Be careful, however, not to allow the solution to become the problem. While tree shade supplies an important layer of rooftop protection, your beautiful birch also can be the source of damage. This is most evident in a clogged rain gutter. If close enough, falling twigs and leaves can land and accumulate in the gutter. Rain thereafter gets trapped in the channel and eventually overflows. Most will fall to the ground. But some could flow onto the roof, slip under the shingles, and cause roof beams to rot. Should this intrusion occur, the problem must be corrected by a qualified residential roofing contractor (or commercial roofing contractor if you’re operating a business).

Bear in mind, the problem is not the trees themselves – it’s overhanging tree limbs lingering above the roof. If large enough, those limbs even can puncture shingles, creating an opening for rain water. Subsequently, you’ll be calling a qualified Orange County roofing contractor to make major repairs.

Is there a solution available to homeowners and business owners? Absolutely -- Trim those tree limbs and periodically clean out rain gutters. These steps will minimize rain gutter debris and help protect your roof throughout the year. It’s that simple.

How Long Does a Roof Last?

It’s a question lingering in your mind – should you replace or repair your existing roof. Ask any Orange County roofer this question, and they’ll likely respond with a similar answer – it all depends. The first question to be answered is what material is the roof made of. Once an Orange County roofing company has this information, it’s much easier to provide an accurate answer. That’s because those you’ve asked will have a better idea of the roof’s lifespan. If it’s got some longevity, repairs could well make sense. If its worn beyond saving, repairs will do little good. Replacement becomes the only option.

Irvine, for example, is one of the many Orange County cities in which the ‘replace or repair’ question is of great relevance. Nestled in the community is a wide variety of homes with roofs of all types and ages. If you noticed roof damage to your home in this city, you’d have to decide whether to repair or replace. In that case, you’d most likely call in an Irvine roofer for an assessment.

The first thing this commercial roofer would want to know is the composition of the shingles. As previously mentioned, each material has its own life cycle. In general, here’s what you can expect from the different materials:

On sloping roofs, asphalt shingles can endure for between 15 and 40 years, treated wood shingles go for about 30 years, and fiberglass can perform admirably for more than 50 years.
On the longer-lasting end of the spectrum are steel roofs. These can endure for 40 to 60 years. Even longer-lasting are tile roofs, which run their course between 40 to 100 years. The big winner, however, is the stone roof, which can do its job for more than 100 years.

Roofs Should Be Seen and Not Heard

You’re relaxing in the living room. Maybe reading a good book. Or curled up in front of the fireplace on a cold winter night. Suddenly, something shatters the calm. It’s an exasperating sound from above. You’re not alone. Virtually everyone has experienced roof noise at one time or another.  We’re not talking soothing rainfall patter. The sound in question typically is a persistent popping, cracking, or creaking. As an Orange County roofing company, we’re well-acquainted with these audio disturbances. And we know they can have any number of causes. The list includes everything from heat expansion and contraction to sound waves generated by aircraft, trains, or vehicle traffic.

Of course, you can’t just snap your fingers and shush a noisy roof. But you can turn down the volume with the right roof covering. Good silencers are sturdy asphalt shingles or tiles made of clay or concrete. When it comes to notoriously noisy metal roofs, it’s what’s underneath that counts. For best results, install this type of roof over a noise-muffling plywood surface or foam insulation.  And don’t overlook the effectiveness of green roofs. Thanks to their rigidity and substantial mass, these make amazing sound resistors.

No matter what the roof type, skylights always toughen your battle against noise. That’s because sound penetrates skylight material more easily than it does roof coverings.

Whatever you do, don’t play guessing games with roof noise. Finding the right solution requires expert analysis. And that’s something best left in the hands of a commercial roofing contractor.

If you have questions about roof noise or are considering roof repairs or upgrades, be sure to reach out to Luke Roofing. A long-established commercial roofer, we provide prompt, reliable expertise for every need and situation. Offering roofing services from Cypress and beyond, Luke Roofing is your trusted Orange County roofing contractor.

The Most Eco-Friendly Roof?

eco friendly roofsAs the environment and environmental concerns come to the cultural forefront - especially here in California - more homeowners are asking how to go green with home renovation and repair projects. One great place to begin going green is with your roof. But which roof is the most eco-friendly? And how green can you get with your roof? We’re here to answer these questions and more.

What does “green” mean for a roof?

When it comes to your roof, there are plenty of ways to go “greener” than you already are right now. One of the most eco-friendly options is probably a truly green roof, which grows heat-deflecting, oxygen-producing, air-cleaning plants on the roof. But you don’t have to get quite that out there when choosing a greener option to replace your home’s roof. Instead, just think about these factors:1.Energy savings
